Canada New Rules for International Students 2023

On December 7, 2023, Canada’s Minister of Immigration, Marc Miller, announced a set of new regulations affecting international students intending to pursue education in the country.

Beginning in the upcoming year, prospective foreign students must demonstrate access to $20,635, a significant increase from the longstanding $10,000 minimum requirement. This financial obligation, which covers living costs, will be subject to annual adjustments based on Statistics Canada’s benchmarks.

In addition to the heightened financial criteria, Minister Miller disclosed that the existing exemption allowing current international students without a work visa to work more than 20 hours per week off-campus will be extended by the federal Liberals.

Impact on Current International Students: It is important to note that the revised minimum financial requirements are applicable solely to new study permit applications received on or after January 1, 2024.

Significance of Extended Work Hours for Eligible International Students: While the decision by the Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) does not solidify the policy as a permanent fixture, it offers a beneficial reprieve for many international students throughout Canada. Allowing students to work additional hours serves to alleviate financial pressures.

Criteria for Eligibility under IRCC’s New Work Hours Policy: Only specific international students qualify for exceeding the standard off-campus job restrictions. To be eligible, a foreign student working more than 20 hours a week must attend in-person classes at a Canadian post-secondary institution (as opposed to online classes from abroad), and their study permit must include off-campus work authorization.

It’s worth noting that students who applied for a study visa on October 7, 2018, when IRCC initially announced this temporary policy in 2022, have also enjoyed the removal of restrictions on off-campus job hours.
